What is Clobetasol Ointment?

Temovate Ointment and the generic alternative clobetasol ointment is a very potent corticosteroid medication used to reduce swelling, itching and redness. Temovate Ointment is used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, allergies, rash, dermatitis and eczema.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Wash and dry your hands and the affected area before using this medication.
  • Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area and rub it in gently. It is typically taken twice a day.
  • Do not bandage, wrap or cover the affected area. If used in the diaper area of an infant, you should not use tight fitting diapers or pants.
  • Unless you are using this medication for your hands, wash your hands thoroughly after using this Temovate Ointment.
  • Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, nose or mouth. If you do get it in these areas, wash thoroughly with plenty of water. Do not use Temovate Ointment on your face groin or underarms unless your doctor has directed you to do so.
  • Do not use clobetasol ointment if there is an infection or sore in the affected area.
  • Do not use clobetasol ointment for longer than two weeks in a row or more than 50g in a week unless advised by your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens within two weeks.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • Your medical history, especially of poor blood circulation, immune system problems or skin conditions.
  • If you are breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

  • Using corticosteroid medications for an extended period of time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. You should tell your doctor or dentist before any surgery or emergency procedures that you use this medication or have used it within the past few months.
  • This medication may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. See a doctor regularly to monitor your child’s height and growth.
  • This medication should only be taken when clearly needed during pregnancy.
