What is Clobetasol Cream?

Temovate Cream and the generic alternative Clobetasol Cream are medications used to treat inflammation and itching caused by plaque psoriasis and other skin conditions. Clobetasol is a highly potent steroid which helps to reduce inflammation.  

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Wash and dry your hands and the affected area before using this medication.
  • Apply a thin layer of medication to the affected area and rub it in gently. It is typically taken twice a day.
  • Do not bandage, wrap or cover the affected area. If used in the diaper area of an infant, you should not use tight fitting diapers or pants.
  • Unless you are using this medication for your hands, wash your hands thoroughly after using this Temovate Cream.
  • Avoid getting this medication in your eyes, nose or mouth. If you do get it in these areas, wash thoroughly with plenty of water.
  • Do not use Clobetasol Cream if there is an infection or sore in the affected area.
  • Do not use Clobetasol Cream for longer than two weeks in a row or more than 50g in a week unless advised by your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens within two weeks.


Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • Your medical history, especially of poor blood circulation, immune system problems or skin conditions.
  • If you are breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

  • Using corticosteroid medications for an extended period of time or over large areas of skin can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. You should tell your doctor or dentist before any surgery or emergency procedures that you use this medication or have used it within the past few months.
  • This medication may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. See a doctor regularly to monitor your child’s height and growth.
  • This medication should only be taken when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Clobetasol Cream side effects

Common Clobetasol Cream side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Burning, itching, swelling or irritation of treated skin.
  • Dry or cracking skin.
  • Crusting or redness around your hair follicles.
  • Spider veins, stretch marks or thinning skin.
  • Acne, rashes or hives.
  • Temporary hair loss.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Clobetasol Cream:

  • Worsening of your condition.
  • Redness, warmth, oozing, severe irritation or swelling of the treated skin.
  • Eye pain or vision problems including blurred vision, tunnel vision or seeing halos around lights.
  • Signs of high blood sugar including increased thirst or urination, dry mouth or a fruity breath odor.
  • Possible signs of absorbing this medicine through your skin such as weight gain in your face and shoulders, slow wound healing, skin discoloration, thinning skin, increased body hair, tiredness, mood changes, menstrual changes or sexual changes.
  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.
