Description

What is Premarin Cream?

Premarin Cream (Conjugated Estrogens) is used to treat the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, painful sexual intercourse, vaginal dryness, vaginal burning and vaginal irritation. These symptoms are caused by the body making less estrogen which is a female sex hormone produced in the ovaries and necessary for many body processes. Premarin Cream works by replacing the estrogen that is normally produced by the body. In addition to being prescribed for menopausal symptoms, Premarin cream can also be used to treat kraurosis vulvae.

How to use Premarin Cream

Premarin Vaginal Cream is normally prescribed on a schedule of using the cream daily for multiple weeks followed by one week when the cream is not applied at all. You should always follow your doctor’s directions. To use Premarin Cream, fill your applicator with the correct amount of cream before lying on your back with your knees up toward your chest. Insert the applicator into your vagina gently and push the plunger down in order to release the cream. Once released, slowly remove the applicator and clean it with mild soap and warm water.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Premarin Vaginal Cream is normally prescribed on a schedule of using the cream daily for multiple weeks followed by one week when the cream is not applied at all. You should always follow your doctor’s directions.
  • Gently squeeze the tube from the bottom to fill the applicator with the prescribed amount of cream, using the markings on the applicator to help you measure.
  • Lie on your back and pull your knees up toward your chest and insert the applicator high into your vagina. Push down the plunger in order to release the cream and then slowly remove the applicator from your vagina.
  • After use, clean your applicator by removing the plunger from the barrel and wash both the applicator and the plunger with mild soap and warm water. You should not use hot water for washing the applicator.
  • If you miss a dose of Premarin Cream, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip your missed dose. Do not use extra cream to make up for the missed dose.

Cautions

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • If you take any other prescription and non-prescription medications.
  • If you have ever had a hysterectomy.
  • Your medical history especially of breast cancer, uterus cancer or vaginal cancer, heart disease, liver or kidney problems or gallbladder disease, asthma, epilepsy, seizures, migraines, lupus, endometriosis, hereditary angioedema, porphyria, a thyroid disorder or high levels of calcium in your blood.

Also be aware that:

  • Premarin Cream should not be used if you are pregnant. Inform your doctor if you think you may be pregnant.
  • Premarin Cream may weaken the latex in a condom, diaphragm or cervical cap. You can talk to your doctor about the most effective birth control methods available while using this medication.
  • Do not use Premarin Cream if you have a history of breast, uterus or vaginal cancer, unusual vaginal bleeding, liver disease, a history of heart attacks, strokes or blood clots or have an increased risk of blood clots because of a heart or blood disorder.
  • This medication may increase the chance of blood clots, stroke or heart attack. You are at even more risk if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or if you are overweight.
  • You should not smoke or use tobacco as estrogens combined with smoking increases your risk of stroke, blood clots, high blood pressure or heart attack, especially in women over 35.
  • This vaginal cream may cause blotchy or dark areas on your skin or face. Sunlight may worsen this effect so you should limit your time in the sun and wear sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps.
  • Make sure to examine your breasts each month and have a doctor perform a mammogram and breast exam annually.
