What is Imitrex?

Imitrex containing the medication sumatriptan is a headache medication used to treat migraine medications. Sumatriptan reduces substances in the body which can trigger headache pain, nausea, light and sound sensitively and other migraine symptoms. Imitrex works by affecting serotonin which narrows blood vessels around the brain. Imitrex will treat migraine headaches but will not prevent them or reduce the number of attacks. It should only be used to treat headaches confirmed by a doctor as a migraine and not for tension headaches or headaches which cause a loss of movement on one side of your body.

• If you are taking Imitrex as a backup for a sumatriptan injection, you can take up to 100mg in a 24 hour period, two hours after an injection.
• Your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking sumatriptan or direct you to take your first dose in their office so they can monitor for side effects.
• If you are taking migraine medications for 10 or more days each month, your headaches may actually become worse due to medication overuse headache.
• Tell your doctor if you need to use this medication more often of if your headaches worsen.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of sumatriptan:

• Signs of a stroke such as slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, sudden severe headache or a sudden numbness or weakness especially on one side of the body.
• Signs of high levels of serotonin in the body such as agitation, twitching, loss of coordination hallucinations, fever, sweating, shivering, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, vomiting or diarrhea.
• Signs of a heart attack symptoms such as nausea, sweating chest pain or pressure or a pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder.li>
• Signs of blood circulation problems in your legs or feet such as cramps, a tight or heavy feeling, numbness or tingling, hip pain, muscle weakness, burning pain, cold feeling, or color changes turning pale or blue.
• Sudden, severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea.
• Severe chest pain, shortness of breath or irregular heartbeats.
• Seizures.
