What is Estrace?

Estrace (estradiol) is a medication which is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, as well as to prevent osteoporosis in menopausal women and to replace the estrogen in women with conditions which cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body.

• You should not smoke or use tobacco while taking Estrace. Smoking combined with estrogens can increase your risk of stroke, high blood pressure, blood clots and heart attack especially in women older than 35.
• This medication can cause dark, blotchy areas on your face or skin. Sunlight can worsen this effect. Limit your time in the sun and wear protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps.
• If you wear contact lenses or are nearsighted, you may develop vision problems. Speak to your eye doctor if these problems happen.
• This medication must not be used during pregnancy.
• Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication and can affect their growth or development. Monitor your child’s growth periodically.

Common Estrace side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach cramps.
• Sleep problems.
• Mood changes.
• Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sore throat or sinus pain.
• Weight gain.
• Headache, back pain or breast pain.
• Thinning scalp hair.
• Vaginal itching, discharge, change in menstrual periods or breakthrough bleeding.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Estrace:

• Signs of a heart attack such as chest pain or pressure, nausea, sweating, or pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder.
• Signs of a stroke such as severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, or sudden numbness or weakness especially on one side of the body.
• Signs of a blood clot such as sudden vision loss, stabbing chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or pain or warmth in one or both legs.
• Swelling or tenderness in your stomach.
• Jaundice.
• Memory problems, confusion or unusual behavior.
• Pelvic pain or unusual vaginal bleeding.
• Breast lumps.
• Signs of a high levels of calcium such as nausea, constipation, vomiting, increased urination or thirst, muscle weakness, lack of energy or bone pain.
