What is Coumadin?

Coumadin and the generic alternative warfarin are anticoagulant medications used to treat and prevent blood clots in veins and arteries often caused by atrial fibrillation, heart valve replacement, recent heart attack or hip and knee replacement surgeries. Warfarin is known as a blood thinner and decreases the amount of clotting proteins in your blood helping to keep blood flowing smoothly around the body.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Warfarin should be taken orally either with or without food and is typically taken once daily.
  • Your Coumadin dosage is based on your medical condition, laboratory tests and your response to treatment. Do not change your dosage or the frequency you take this medication unless advised by a doctor.
  • While taking Warfarin, it is important to eat a consistent, balanced diet. Avoid sudden large increases or decreases in foods high in vitamin D such as broccoli, cabbage, sprouts, kale, cauliflower, spinach and other green, leafy vegetables, liver, green tea and vitamin supplements.
  • Coumadin is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take this medication at the same time each day. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.
  • Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
  • Your medical history especially of blood disorders, bleeding problems, blood vessel disorders, kidney disease, liver disease or mental or mood disorders.
  • If you have had any recent injuries or surgeries or if you suffer from frequent falls or injuries.
  • Your use or abuse of alcohol.
  • If you have an illness, infection, have not been eating well or start taking any antibiotic. These conditions may affect how warfarin works.
  • If you are breast feeding. Warfarin may pass into breast milk but it is unlikely to harm an infant.

Also be aware that:

  • You should tell all of your doctors and dentists that you take warfarin before any surgery or procedures.
  • You should avoid getting injections into your muscles. If you must have a muscle injection, it should be given into the arm.
  • Coumadin may cause stomach bleeding. This risk is increased by alcohol. You should limit your alcohol intake while taking this medication. Ask your doctor what a safe amount of alcohol for you is.
  • You should lower your chance of bleeding or injuries. Take care when shaving, brushing your teeth, cutting your nails or handling sharp objects. Avoid contact sports and other activities which may cause injuries.
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication.
  • Coumadin is not recommended during pregnancy as it may cause serious or fatal harm to an unborn baby. You should use reliable birth control while using this medication and for one month after stopping warfarin. This medication can also be absorbed through the skin and lungs. Pregnant women should not handle or breathe in the dust from Coumadin tablets.

Coumadin Side Effects

Common Coumadin side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • Nausea or loss of appetite.
  • Stomach or abdominal pain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Coumadin:

  • Signs of bleeding such as bleeding gums, nosebleeds, bleeding from wounds or injections, abnormal vaginal bleeding, blood in your urine or stools or coughing up blood.

Q: Who should I tell that I take warfarin?

A: Tell all of your doctors and dentists that you take this medication before any surgery or other medical or dental procedures. Ask your doctor about carrying an ID card or bracelet.

Q: What should I do if I miss a dose of Coumadin?

A: If you miss a dose of this medication, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip your missed dose
