What is Climara?

Climara is a skin patch containing estradiol which is used to treat symptoms of menopause including vaginal dryness, burning and irritation as well as hot flashes. Estradiol is an estrogen which is a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries and necessary for many body processes.

• If you wear contact lenses or are near sighted, you may develop further vision problems. Tell your eye doctor know if this occurs.
• You will need to tell testing personnel that you use Climara if you have an MRI test. Some patches may cause serious burns during an MRI test.
• Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication and it can affect their growth. Monitor your child’s growth periodically.
• This medication should not be used during pregnancy.

Common Climara side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Headache, back pain or breast pain.
• Cold symptoms such as sore throat, sinus pain and stuffy nose.
• Vaginal itching or discharge, breakthrough bleeding or changes to your menstrual periods.
• Nausea, vomiting, bloating or stomach cramps.
• Redness or irritation where the patch was worn.
• Thinning scalp hair.
• Signs of fluid retention such as swelling or rapid weight gain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Climara:

• Signs of a heart attack such as chest pain or pressure, nausea, sweating or a pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder.
• Signs of increased blood pressure such as severe headache, blurred vision, anxiety, nosebleeds or a pounding in your neck or ears.
• Signs of a stroke such as sudden severe headache, slurred speech, vision problems, balance problems or a sudden numbness or weakness especially on one side of your body.
• Signs of a blood clot such as vision loss, stabbing chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or pain or warmth in one or both legs.
• Swelling or tenderness in your stomach.
• Jaundice.
• Unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvis pain.
• Breast lumps.
• Memory problems, confusion or unusual behavior.
• Signs of high levels of calcium in your blood such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst or urination, muscle weakness, bone pain or a lack of energy.
