What is Cafergot?

Cafergot is a combination medication combining caffeine and ergotamine and is prescribed to treat certain types of headaches including migraines and cluster headaches. The two medications in Cafergot work together to relieve headache pain which is often caused by widened blood vessels in the head. Ergotamine works by narrowing widened blood vessels while caffeine increases the absorption of ergotamine while also narrowing blood vessels.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Cafergot should be taken orally either with or without food. Two tablets are typically taken at the first sign of headache, followed by a further tablet every half our until the headache is relieved.
  • You should not take more than six tablets per attack or ten tablets across a seven day period.
  • Your Cafergot dosage is usually based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not change your dosage or the frequency you take this medication unless advised by a doctor.
  • Cafergot is most effective when it is taken at the first sign of a headache. If you wait until the headache gets worse, it may not be as effective.
  • Cafergot is normally taken as needed and not for long-term daily use.
  • Using medication for migraine attacks on 10 or more days each month may actually make your headaches worse due to medication overuse headaches.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you have any drug allergies.

  • Your medical history especially of blood circulation problems, headaches, heart problems, kidney disease, liver disease, stroke or mini-stroke.
  • If you are using marijuana.
  • If you are breast feeding.

Also be aware that:

  • This medication may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery or do anything else requiring alertness until it can be done safely.
  • Limit your alcoholic beverages while taking Cafergot as alcohol can cause headaches.
  • You should avoid tobacco and nicotine products while taking this medication. Talk to your doctor about how to stop smoking. Tobacco and nicotine can cause serious side effects such as heart problems and decreased blood flow.
  • This medication may harm an unborn baby and must not be used during pregnancy. Speak to your doctor about reliable forms of birth control.
  • Your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking this medication or direct you to take your first dose of this medication in the office to monitor for serious side effects.
