What is Cafergot?

Cafergot is a combination medication combining caffeine and ergotamine and is prescribed to treat certain types of headaches including migraines and cluster headaches. The two medications in Cafergot work together to relieve headache pain which is often caused by widened blood vessels in the head. Ergotamine works by narrowing widened blood vessels while caffeine increases the absorption of ergotamine while also narrowing blood vessels.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Cafergot should be taken orally either with or without food. Two tablets are typically taken at the first sign of headache, followed by a further tablet every half our until the headache is relieved.
  • You should not take more than six tablets per attack or ten tablets across a seven day period.
  • Your Cafergot dosage is usually based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not change your dosage or the frequency you take this medication unless advised by a doctor.
  • Cafergot is most effective when it is taken at the first sign of a headache. If you wait until the headache gets worse, it may not be as effective.
  • Cafergot is normally taken as needed and not for long-term daily use.
  • Using medication for migraine attacks on 10 or more days each month may actually make your headaches worse due to medication overuse headaches.
