What is Atrovent?

Atrovent Inhaler (ipratropium) is a bronchodilator which is used to prevent the narrowing of the airways within the lungs in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Atrovent Inhaler works by relaxing the muscles around your airways which allows them to open up making breathing easier for you. Ipratropium must be used regularly in order to be effective and does not work as quickly as quick relief inhalers such as albuterol.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

  • Inhale this medication orally. It is typically taken four times a day. When inhaling, put your lips tightly around the mouthpiece and keep your eyes closed.
  • On your first time using the inhaler or if it has not been used for three days, prime the inhaler away from your face.
  • If you use any other inhalers or if your prescribed dose of Atrovent is two puffs, wait at least a minute before inhalations.
  • Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after using Atrovent to prevent throat irritation and dry mouth.
  • Your Atrovent dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not change your dosage or the frequency you take this medication unless advised by a doctor.
  • Clean the inhaler mouthpiece with water once a week and allow it to air dry fully before using it again.
  • When taking Atrovent regularly, it is most effective when it is taken at evenly spaced intervals. Try to take Atrovent at the same time each day.
  • Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
  • Keep a track of the number of inhalations used on each inhaler and discard the canister after using the labeled number of inhalations.
  • Ask your doctor which of your inhalers you should use as a quick-relief inhaler you should use if your breathing worsens.
