Advair Diskus (Fluticasone / Salmeterol) is a combination medication inhaler used to prevent asthma attacks by controlling symptoms such as wheezing, coughing shortness of breath, and chest tightness among others. These symptoms are often brought on by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The two medications that make up Advair Diskus are fluticasone and salmeterol which work together to manage asthma symptoms. Fluticasone works by reducing irritation and swelling of the airways whereas the salmeterol works by opening the airways and therefore making breathing easier for you. Using a combination medication such as the Advair Diskus or its generic alternative, does not increase the risk of asthma-related breathing problems that using the salmeterol alone may do.
The medication comes with its own inhaler in the shape of a disc which gives it its name. The Advair Diskus is usually used twice daily, twelve hours apart and should be used regularly in order to be effective and may take a week or longer before you feel the full benefit of it. It should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks. Depending on the brand, the inhaler should be used in either a flat, level position or in a vertical position but this will be clear in the medication instructions. During inhalation, you may not be able taste or feel the drug. This is normal and you do not need to take another dose. As well as the brand name Advair Diskus, we also stock a generic alternative also known as Seroflo which is the same medication combination but may offer better savings.
Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.
