What is Actonel?

Actonel and the generic alternative risedronate are medications used to treat and prevent osteoporosis caused by menopause, steroid use or gonadal failure and to treat Paget’s disease. Do not lie down until after your first food of the day.
• Actonel is most effective when it is taken regularly. Try to take it at the same time each morning.
• Always follow your doctor’s directions for the frequency you should be taking this medication.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.

• Indigestion or diarrhea.
• Back pain, stomach pain, joint pain or muscle pain.
• Flu symptoms.

• Chest pain, new or worsening heartburn or a burning pain in your upper stomach.
• Difficulty or pain when swallowing.

• Jaw pain, swelling or numbness.
• Severe joint, back or muscle pain.
• Signs of low calcium levels such as muscle spasms or contractions, numbness or a tingly feeling around your mouth or in your toes and fingers.
• Signs of a severe skin reaction such as fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain or a red or purple skin rash which spreads and causes blistering and peeling.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.
