Why is Ventolin Inhaler prescribed?

Ventolin HFA Inhaler (Salbutamol) is used to prevent symptoms brought on by breathing problems. It is widely used in asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patients to control and treat wheezing and shortness of breath that may occur. Salbutamol works by relaxing muscles in the airways and increasing airflow where it is needed: the lungs. A narrowing of airways in the lungs is called bronchospasm and the Ventolin inhaler can be used to treat and prevent such an issue to occur. 

The Albuterol Inhaler (generic) is also available in addition to the brand name Ventolin HFA inhaler.

What is the most effective way to take Ventolin Inhaler?

Use Ventolin Inhaler exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to demonstrate any part of the process so you clearly understand.

If using to prevent exercise-induced breathing problems:

• use Ventolin inhaler 15 to 30 minutes before partaking in any physical activity
• the effects may last from 4 to 6 hours
• seek medical attention immediately if you experience immediate worsening of symptoms after using Ventolin

Note on storage: 

• one should keep this inhaler with the mouthpiece down
• keep the inhaler canister away from open fire or high heat as it can explode that way

Before using Ventolin Inhaler,

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to salbutamol, or any other drug allergies you have
• tell your doctor about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, seizures, or low potassium levels in the blood, etc
• tell your doctor if you are or plan to become pregnant while using Ventolin HFA
• tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding

Do not use Ventolin if:

• you are under the age of 4

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• chest pain
• back pain
• headache
• dizziness
• nervousness
• sore throat or sinus pain

More serious side effects can occur. STOP using Ventolin Inhaler and tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• wheezing, choking, or other breathing problems developed after using the inhaler
• fast heart rate
• painful urination
• signs of high blood sugar - including increased thirst, dry mouth, etc.
• signs of low potassium - including irregular heartbeat, numbness, etc.
