This drug works by relaxing the muscles in the airways allowing for easier breathing. It is meant to be used regularly in order to be effective. It is not a quick-relief inhaler and so it will not work fast enough to prevent sudden breathing problems.

Spiriva Respimat may also be used to prevent asthma attacks in children at least 6 years of age and adults.

Use Spiriva Respimat exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist.

  • put your lips tightly around the mouthpiece
  • usually 2 sprays once daily

  • do not increase your dosage or take for longer than prescribed without first speaking with your doctor
  • rinse your mouth after each use
  • clean the mouthpiece at least once a week or as directed

Remember that Spiriva Respimat is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used for bronchospasm attacks. One should only use a quick-relief inhaler in these cases or seek medical attention if the quick-relief inhaler is not working well enough.
