Why is Premarin prescribed?

Premarin (Conjugated Estrogens; a mixture of estrogen hormones) is used by those experiencing menopause symptoms. Menopause symptoms may include hot flashes and other vaginal changes. During menopause it is also common to experience bone loss and Premarin can help prevent that from occurring. Estrogen is normally produced by the ovaries and is an essential part of many processes in the body. 

Premarin Tablets are available for purchase in various strengths (.3mg, 1.25mg, and .625mg). 

What is the most effective way to take Premarin?

Use Premarin exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist. 

• tablet is taken orally
• sometimes taken on a daily basis
• sometimes taken in a cycle i.e. 3 weeks on and 1 week off
• do not take more or less of this medicine without speaking to your doctor first

Pregnancy warning:

• Do not take Premarin if you are pregnant
• If you think you are or become pregnant while on this medication, tell your doctor right away

Before using Premarin,

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to Premarin or any other drug allergies you have
• tell your doctor about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as endometriosis, asthma, migraines, seizures, extremely high or low levels of calcium, pancreatic disease, etc.
• tell your doctor if you plan to become pregnant - it is NOT recommended to take Premarin if you are pregnant

Note:

• estrogen may increase the risk of developing endometrial cancer - the longer you stay on the medication, the greater the risk

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• headache 
• back pain
• gas
• stomach pain
• breast tenderness
• depression
• irritability
• changes in sexual desire

More serious side effects can occur. STOP taking Premarin and tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• movements that are difficult to control
• weakness
• joint pain
• memory problems
• jaundice
• a lump in your breast - get regular checkups and self examine
• swelling in your stomach

Get immediate medical help if you have:

• any signs of an allergic reaction - including hives, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of any part of your face or body

Is it safe to take Premarin while trying to become or being pregnant?

No, it is absolutely not safe to take Premarin tablets while pregnant. Speak to your doctor immediately if you have a feeling that you might be pregnant. 

What if I miss a dose of Premarin?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember to unless it is too close to the time of your next dose. In that case, never take 2 doses to make up for the missed one. 

Is there anything specific I should avoid while taking Premarin?

It is highly recommended to avoid smoking as it can increase the risk of developing blood clots and/or having a stroke or heart attack. Also, avoid consuming any products with grapefruit including grapefruit juice. Talk to your doctor about any other lifestyle changes they reccomend.
