Why is Plaquenil prescribed?

Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) is a drug used to treat or prevent malaria or other infections brought on by a mosquito bite. It can also be used for other reasons not listed here. Hydroxychloroquine belongs to a class called antimalarials.

What is the most effective way to take Plaquenil?

Use Plaquenil exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist.

• It comes as a tablet taken by mouth

Prevention:

• in adults: usually, 2 tablets taken once a week on the same day - starting 1-2 weeks before travel and continuing 8 weeks after exposure
• in children: the amount is based on the weight of the child

Treatment

• in adults: usually, 4 tablets taken right away - followed by 2 more tablets 6 - 8 hours later and continuing on 2 tablets each for the following 2 days
• in children: the amount is based on the weight of the child

Pregnancy warning:

Malaria is more likely to cause death in a woman who is pregnant. If you are or think you are pregnant, consult with your doctor before travelling to areas with Malaria. 

Before taking Plaquenil, 

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to Hydroxychloroquine or any other drug allergies you have
• tell your doctor about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as diabetes, stomach disorders, psoriasis, alcoholism, etc.
• tell your doctor if you think you may be or are pregnant 
• tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• headache
• loss of appetite
• skin rash

More serious side effects can occur. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• extremely slow heart rate
• muscle weakness i.e. numbness, tingling
• chest pain
• signs of low blood sugar - including dizziness

Get immediate medical help if you have:

• any signs of an allergic reaction - including hives, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of any part of your face or body
• signs of damage to the retina of your eye - including seeing flashes, swelling or color changes in eye

What if I miss a dose of Plaquenil?

Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take double up on medicine to make up the missed dose.
