What is Lumigan used for?

Lumigan (Bimatoprost) is an eye drop medication which is prescribed to treat certain types of glaucoma, ocular hypertension and other causes of high pressure within the eye. Lowering high pressure inside your eye can help to prevent blindness in the future. Lumigan may also be used to treat eyelash hypotrichosis and can be used on the upper eyelashes in order to make eyelashes longer, thicker and darker.

How does Lumigan work?

Bimatoprost eye drops regulates the flow of fluid from the eye and increases the amount of fluid that drains away. Lumigan helps to lower high pressure within your eye, maintaining a normal pressure and helping to prevent possible blindness.

Always read the patient information and instructions carefully before using this medication.

• Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using this medication.
• Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid in order to make a small pocket.
• Hold dropper above your eye tip down. Looking up and away, squeeze a drop out into the eye.
• After using, close the afflicted eye or eyes for between 2 and 3 minutes while gently pressing your finger to the inside corner of your eye in order to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
• Use a clean tissue to remove any excess solution from around the eye. Take care not to touch the eye.
• Wait at least five minutes before using any other eye drops.
• Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or place it directly into your eye as a contaminated dropper may infect your eye.
• Do not increase or change your Lumigan dosage unless advised by a doctor. Bimatoprost is typically one drop into the effected eye or eyes each evening.

Make sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have any drug allergies.
• Which other prescription and non-prescription medications you currently take.
• Your medical history especially of swelling or eye infection, retinal detachment or eye surgery or injury.
• If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast-feeding.

Also be aware that:

• Lumigan eye drops should not be used while wearing contact lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using Lumigan before putting in your contact lenses.
• This medication may cause a gradual eye color change which may occur slowly and may not be noticeable for months or years. Typically, it is an increase in brown pigment and may be permanent.
• Lumigan should not be used by anyone younger than 16.  

Common Lumigan side effects may include but are not limited to:

• Increased sensitivity to light.
• Redness, itching or feeling as if something is in your eyes.
• A gradual change in eye color of the treated eye. This may be very slow and not noticeable for months or years. This change may be permanent.
• Increased growth or thickness of your eyelashes.

Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects of Lumigan:

• Eye swelling, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage of the eye.
• Vision changes.
• Red, swollen or itchy eyelids.

Q: How do you apply Lumigan?

A: Tilt back your head. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket.  Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze a drop out. Keep your eye closed for between 2 and 3 minutes in order for the medication to be absorbed. Remove any excess solution after this time with a clean tissue.

Q: Does Lumigan help with eyelash growth?

A: Lumigan may be prescribed to treat eyelash hypotrichosis, a condition indicated by an inadequate amount of eyelashes. It can be used on the upper eyelashes to increase their growth, making them longer, thicker and darker.
