What is Singulair?

Singulair (Montelukast) is a medication used to prevent asthma attacks, exercise induced bronchospasm and year round or seasonal allergies. This medication does not work immediately and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks or breathing problems but should be taken regularly to help. Montelukast works by blocking natural substances called leukotrienes which can cause swelling in the lungs and tightening of muscles around the airways when you breathe in an allergen such as pollen.

• Singulair tablets should be taken orally and can be taken with or without food.
• Your montelukast dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. You should not change or increase your dosage unless advised by a doctor.
• Montelukast should be taken at the same time each day. If you are taking this medication for asthma or both asthma and allergies, montelukast is typically taken in the evening. When taken for only allergies, it can be taken in the morning or evening.

• When taken for asthma, continue to use this medication, even when you feel fine. Do not stop taking this medication without speaking to a doctor.

• Signs of a severe skin reaction including fever, sore throat, swelling in the face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash which spreads especially to your face or upper body and causes blistering and peeling.
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficulty breathing or a swelling of your face, lips or throat.

Q: What should I do if I miss a dose of montelukast?

A: Take your missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose then skip your missed dose. Do not take this medicine more than once a day.
