Why is Advair HFA prescribed?

Advair HFA Inhaler (Fluticasone Propionate/Salmeterol Xinafoate) is a steroid drug used to prevent symptoms brought on by asthma such as wheezing.

What is Advair HFA made of?

Advair HFA contains a combination of 2 medications: Fluticasone (a corticosteroid that reduces the swelling of the airways) and Salmeterol (a long-acting beta-agonist that opens airways in the lungs) that work together to control unwanted symptoms of breathing problems. If Salmeterol or other long-acting beta-agonists are used alone, it may rarely increase the risk of serious asthma-related breathing problems. Notes: 

• If you do not know how to use the inhaler device properly or it has been a while, it is important to learn/re-learn how to use it in order for the treatment to be effective.
• Advair HFA is not to be used as a quick-relief inhaler in times of an asthma attack or other sudden breathing problems. It will not work fast enough. Get medical help right away if you experience an asthma attack and do not have a quick-relief inhaler. 

Use Advair HFA Inhaler exactly as directed by your doctor. Ensure you read and understand all the information provided to you by your doctor and/or pharmacist. 

• test spray the inhaler (awat from the face/eyes) if you are using it for the first time or the first time in a long time
• shake the inhaler for 5 seconds before each use
• inhale orally usually twice a day (~12 hours apart)
• wait 30 seconds between each inhalation
• if you are using other inhalers at the same time, wait at least 1 minute between each medication, then take this one last
• rinse your mouth with water after each use
• clean the inhaler at least once a week 
• use the inhaler regularly to get the most benefits from this treatment

Note: Do not use other long-acting beta agonists while using the Advair HFA inhaler. If you are using another quick-relief inhaler on a regular basis, you must speak to your doctor about stopping this schedule. 

• tell your doctor if you are allergic to Fluticasone, Salmeterol, or any other drug allergies you have
• tell your doctor about every other medication you are taking or plan to take (including nonprescription and herbal products)
• tell your doctor about your current and past medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease including high blood pressure, a food allergy, any type of infection, a thyroid disorder, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, etc.
• tell your doctor if you are pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of continuing on this medication 
• you may need to regularly check your blood pressure and report any high results to your physician 

Note: long term use of any steroid can lead to osteoporosis (bone loss). Talk with your doctor. 

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

• headache
• hoarseness
• upset stomach
• cold symptoms

More serious side effects can occur. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience:

• white patches on tongue/mouth area
• signs of infection - including persistent sore throat or fever
• signs of high blood sugar - including increased thirst or urination 
• signs of a hormonal disorder - including light-headed feelings, nausea, and vomiting
• trouble sleeping
• vision changes/problems
• shaking/tremors
• mental and mood changes

Get immediate medical help if you have:

• signs of severe and sudden worsening of breathing problems/asthma symptoms
• chest pain
• severe dizziness or fainting
• any signs of an allergic reaction - including hives, rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of any part of your face or body

What if I miss a dose of Advair HFA?

Don't take extra puffs of the inhaler if you forget. Use your next dose at your next scheduled time.
